Talking Pixels Fighter Builder
Make a 2D fighting game in Godot. No code needed, and free.
A fighting game that already runs at 60 frames a second
The Fighter Builder is a set of screens inside Godot that edit your game for you. The game already runs at a steady 60fps, reads inputs, checks hitboxes and handles rounds. You decide who fights and how every move works.
Open it, press Play, and you have a one-on-one 2D fighter with rounds, a timer, specials, supers, combos and a CPU opponent. The sample game, Clash of Four, has four fighters and three stages. Then you change it into yours.
Free, for Godot 4.4 or newer. No code needed.
The four screens
- Game — title, round length, rounds to win, CPU strength.
- Move Lab — tune every move's frames and hitbox with a live preview.
- Database — fighters, moves and stages.
- Art — bring in your own fighter sprites and stage backdrops.
The Move Lab
This is where your fighters get their feel, and it's the part nothing else gives you for free.
Pick a move and its timeline appears frame by frame: yellow is startup, before the attack can hit; red is active, when the hitbox is live; blue is recovery, when you're stuck finishing it. Underneath, On hit and On block tell you who acts first afterwards — +3 on hit means you recover three frames before your opponent and can keep attacking; −8 on block means they hit you back.
Drag the slider to step through a move one frame at a time, or press Play to watch it at game speed. Change a number and the preview updates.
Every setting is there: startup, active and recovery frames, hitstun and blockstun, damage, whether it hits high, mid, low or overhead, hitbox position and size, knockback, launch, lunge, projectiles, and meter cost — 100 makes it a super.
What you get
- A working sample game with four fighters and three stages, and a full how-to guide as a PDF.
- Combos, cancels and a meter that fills as you fight.
- Blocking that works properly: lows must be crouch-blocked, overheads stand-blocked.
- A CPU opponent from pushover to genuinely annoying, on a 1–10 dial.
- Copy a moveset from… — give a new fighter a whole set at once, then tune what's different.
- F1 in a fight draws every hitbox and hurtbox, so you can see exactly why something whiffed.
- Plain-text data files, so a backup is a copy of one folder.
Getting started
Install Godot 4.4+ (the standard build, not .NET), unzip this, import project.godot, and click the Fighter Builder tab at the top of the editor. Press Play from start. About five minutes.
The full guide is here, and it walks you through adding a fifth fighter with their own special in about ten minutes.
