Talking Pixels Action RPG Builder
Make a real-time action RPG in Godot. No code needed, and free.
Swing, dodge, cast — before you change a thing
The Action RPG Builder is a set of screens inside Godot that edit your game for you. The game that ships with it already handles combat, enemies, levelling, items, dialogue and saving.
Open it, press Play, and you have a top-down action RPG: swing a sword, dodge-roll through attacks, cast spells, and fight in real time. The sample game, Thornvale, shows every feature working before you change anything. Then you change it into yours.
Free, for Godot 4.4 or newer. No code needed.
The five screens
- Game — title, hero class, start map and position, starting level and gold.
- Database — hero classes, enemies, skills, items and zones.
- Events — dialogue, choices, chests, rewards, ambushes, doors.
- Maps — make maps, paint them, place events and enemy spawns, play-test.
- Art — bring in your own sprites and backdrops.
What you get
- A working sample game, and a full how-to guide as a PDF.
- Enemies with real behaviour: chase runs at you, charger winds up visibly then rushes, shooter keeps its distance and fires, wander ambles about.
- Skills as projectiles, novas and heals — learned at a level, or taught by an event.
- An event editor with choices, branches and run-once switches, no scripting.
- Ambushes and bosses through Spawn enemy, and doors through Transfer player.
- Plain-text data files, so a backup is a copy of one folder.
Getting started
Install Godot 4.4+ (the standard build, not .NET), unzip this, import project.godot, and click the Action RPG Builder tab at the top of the editor. Press Play from start. About five minutes.
The full guide is here, and it walks you through your first quest end to end.
Credit
Free to use, including in games you sell. The one thing it asks is a line somewhere players can see it — credits screen, store page or About box:
